Setting goals is a way to keep you motivated and focused when you want to succeed in anything. As we transition from the fall to winter sport’s seasons, it is critical to regroup and decide what your goals are for the upcoming season. It is also necessary to take the time and reflect and see how many of your goals were completed over the fall! By doing this year-round, you will be able to stay on top of your goals and be successful in reaching your potential!
How to set my goals: It is vital to set goals that can be measured/completed and never too many of them! When setting goals, remember that you want to be able to acknowledge whether or not you completed them. Make sure all of the goals you set are realistic! Give yourself a certain amount of time to complete the goals! When you keep the goals realistic, measurable and a small number of them- that is how you accomplish them! What should my goals be: The goals you set can be relevant to any area in your life at a given time period. If you decide to set new goals at the beginning of basketball season, they don’t have to be just basketball related! You may have finals coming up or something else related to school that you want to excel in. You may have something going in with your family that you want to change such as visiting your grandmother once a week. Think of setting goals the same way as you do a “New Year’s Resolution”, except do it periodically and not just once a year!
How often can I tell when my goals are completed and when should I make new ones: It is important to stay on top of your goals all the time! Depending on what the goal is, once you complete it, you should add a new one. Constantly strive to do your best! Reward yourself for completing goals! You should feel accomplished when you complete a goal as it is, but when you have an incentive it can really help target important goals!
The only way to accomplish your goals is to work hard and never give up! It is important to remember that consistency is key, reaching your potential takes time! Never get discouraged and be tenacious!
